  Americans are busier than ever before. We have a work ethic that makes us feel guilty if we are not being "productive."  To appeal to the needs of my time management seminar participants to be more productive, I explain to them that if they take more time for themselves they will actually be more productive in the long run and they will avoid burnout.

  "Parkinson's Law" states that work expands to fill the time allotted to its completion. I often suggest to everyone attending my time management session that they pretend they're in a car pool.

  The idea is to have a specific goal for when you're going to quit for the day. Otherwise you get into an "I can always stay late and get it done" mode of working. After awhile you have to stay late to get things done because you get sloppy and unfocused with your priority setting.

By pretending you have to catch your car-pool ride home, you'll force yourself to rethink what you're doing and focus on the truly important items. The bonus is you get home at a decent hour and have more time for your personal life.

  Remember the old saying: "If you win the rat race, you’re still a rat."
